Zhang Dayong, Ji Qiang, Shi Xunpeng: Looking at Energy Security and Transformation From the Perspective of Europe’s Gas Cut-Off

Release time:2022-09-08Author: Zhang Dayong, Ji Qiang, Shi Xunpeng

Starting from the event that Russia Natural Gas Co., Ltd. announced the indefinite interruption of Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline on September 2, this paper analyzes the impact of the European energy crisis triggered by the Russian Ukrainian conflict, including the impact on the basic life of European residents, European natural gas prices, and natural gas reserves in many countries. The article believes that the current dilemma of the EU is, on the one hand, the inevitable result of the world economic recession, the reshaping of the international political pattern, the conflicts and games among various forces since the epidemic, and, on the other hand, the inevitable risk and challenge of the energy transformation under the climate crisis. The gas cut-off by Russia and fluctuations of European energy policies reflect the inherent difficulties and uncertainties of the energy transition. It suggests that we need to fully consider the delicate balanced relationship between energy transition and security when formulating policies, so as to realize the security and sustainability of the overall path.
