Release time:2022-09-23Author: Zhang Ye, Cheng Lingguo

This paper first analyzes the causes of the East Asian metropolis disease, and believes that the problem of low fertility in East Asian metropolises is due to both the common causes of metropolises and the influence of East Asian culture. Specifically: 1. The population density of East Asian metropolises is relatively high. 2. Overtime culture prevails in metropolises and commutes take a lot of time. 3. The inequality of income and wealth has triggered an educational arms race. 4. Gender inequality in East Asian countries has worsened the metropolis disease in East Asia, leading to women's unwillingness to have children.

Then, the article proposes measures to deal with the East Asian metropolis disease. Specifically: 1. Realize common prosperity, increase employment opportunities, and enhance social class mobility. 2. Protect labor rights and improve urban commuting conditions. 3. Develop multi-core satellite cities, relying on industries, and establish a model of complementary and symbiotic regional urban circles. 4. The state and society should share the family support function and provide women with equal employment opportunities.

Finally, according to the specific situation of Jiangsu and drawing on the successful experience of small and medium cities in Europe and the United States, this paper proposes that Jiangsu should aim at promoting the harmonious development of large, medium and small cities in metropolitan areas.
