Chen Liu and Zhang Yu: The Structural Reasons for Zhejiang's Export Surpassing Jiangsu for the First Time

Release time:2024-01-25Author: Chen Liu and Zhang Yu

In 2023, Jiangsu's export declined 2.5 percent from a year earlier to 3.37 trillion yuan. Meanwhile, Zhejiang's export increased 3.9 percent from a year earlier to 3.57 trillion yuan. This is the first time in over a decade that Zhejiang surpassed Jiangsu in terms of export value. This article analyzes the reasons from the perspective of statistical data.

1. From the perspective of export destinations, Jiangsu's export concentration to developed countries is higher, while Zhejiang's export to the Belt and Road countries has comparative advantages.

2. From the perspective of the export distribution within the province, the export growth rates in some traditional underdeveloped areas such as central and northern Jiangsu are relatively quick. However, due to the small base, it is difficult to make up for the export decline in southern Jiangsu.

3. From the perspective of ownership of export enterprises, the main role of private enterprises in Zhejiang is fully demonstrated.

4. From the perspective of export commodity classification, Jiangsu's export is highly dependent on electronic and mechanical products, while the concentration of Zhejiang's export categories is relatively scattered, which is conducive to improving resilience.

5. From the perspective of trade method, Zhejiang has had advantages in general trade for a long time, which is conducive to resisting the risks of international supply chain changes.

Under the fluctuation trend of globalization and global supply chain, Jiangsu is under more pressure in terms of export compared to Zhejiang. Currently, the pressure and driving force for Jiangsu's transformation and development coexist.
