The Yangtze River Delta and the Tokai Area are regions with clear development benefits where the manufacturing industry is highly focused and are “star” regions that reflect national competitiveness in China and Japan. On November 8, 2006, the Sino-Japan Seminar on Regional Economic Development was held jointly by the Yangtze River Delta Economics and Social Development Research Center of Nanjing University, during which both sides spoke of the economic development and industrial transformation of the two regions and delved into the occurrence, causes and law of industrial agglomeration in the regions. The book is a collection of related papers regarding these issues. The research on the Yangtze River Delta concentrates on topics such as how to strategically promote China’s export-oriented economy in the global value chain, entrepreneurial function transformation and industrial innovation in the Yangtze River Delta, regional development coordinated in the Yangtze River Delta, business cost and industrial distribution pattern, and the formation and evolution of industrial agglomeration. Research into the Tokai Area concentrates on topics such as the characteristics of industrial agglomeration, analysis of the economy from the viewpoint of social resource allocation, industrial development, and population flow in the Tokai Area. The book also further discusses the current situation and prospect of the agglomeration of enterprises from the Tokai Area in the Yangtze River Delta.
