Liu Donghuang and Du Yuwei: Key Strategies to Expand Consumer Demand of Jiangsu Residents

Abstract: In recent years, the actual characteristics of consumer demand of Jiangsu residents are mainly manifested in the steady growth of residents’ consumption level, continuous rise in consumption structure, increased propensity to consume, and the modernization of the mode of consumption. However, the consumption capacity needs to be improved, the consumer product supply system needs to be improved, the consumption potential needs to be tapped, and the consumption environment needs to be improved. At present, the main difficulty facing Jiangsu’s expansion of residents’ consumer demand lies in how to broaden the channels for residents to increase income, promote industrial transformation and upgrading, and overcome the new “three mountains”. To this end, the following key strategies should be adopted: the first is to increase the income of urban and rural residents through multiple channels to solve the problem of residents “not having enough money”. The second is to take multiple measures to expand the middle-income group to solve the problem of residents “unwilling to spend money”. The third is to improve the public service system from different aspects to solve the problem of residents “not daring to spend money”. The fourth is to improve the product supply system by multiple means to solve the problem of “how to spend money”. The fifth is to strengthen the construction of consumer infrastructure at multiple levels to solve the problem of “inconvenient to spend money”.
