The separation of innovation in education resources and business entities is common in China. In Shenzhen, the forefront of reform and opening up, for example, business entities have made significant achievements in innovation and development, but due to lack of local universities, there has been little progress in college innovation and development. In contrast, despite of numerous universities in cities such as Nanjing, Wuhan and Xi’an, there is still a huge gap between them and Shenzhen in terms of innovation and development of business entities. This problem deserves the attention of those cities with abundant science and education resources but insufficient industrial innovation. Professor Liu Zhibiao, Dean of Yangtze IDEI, held in-depth discussions with relevant experts and scholars on the causes for the present ubiquitous phenomenon of separation of innovation and development between business entities and colleges. They also proposed several policy suggestions on how to promote construction of innovation-oriented cities in China based on analysis of Shenzhen’s successful experience.
