Kong Lingchi: The Layout Characteristics and Spatial Reshaping of China's Manufacturing Industry

Release time:2019-04-06Author: Kong Lingchi

The rationality of the manufacturing layout affects the overall economic and social development. The basic characteristics of China's manufacturing layout at this stage are as follows: the manufacturing layout on both sides of the "Hu Huanyong Line" has formed an obvious industrial gradient, with the southeast half of the line presenting a spatial polarization pattern of the "Matthew Effect"; the economic geographical pattern begins to transform from Krugman's "from dispersion to agglomeration" paradigm to Helpman's "from agglomeration to decentralization", but the kinetic energy of industrial transfer and industrial innovation is insufficient, with the manufacturing industry in the northeast having an obviously declining trend; the level of industrial specialization among regions has gradually increased, with different industries beginning to separate in space, but there still exist a more apparent convergence of industrial structure. Constructing an effective coordination and balance mechanism and seeking the combination of government and the market are the rational logic to promote the rationalization of manufacturing layout. The practical strategies for rationalizing the layout of the manufacturing industry lie in: firstly, breaking through the "Hu Huanyong Line" to achieve the balanced development of regional industries; secondly, forming the spatial movement of industries to show comparative advantages; thirdly, promoting the division and cooperation of regional industries to enhance the development of industrial integration. In addition, the eastern region taking the lead in innovation, the middle region rising to give play to its advantages, the western region strengthening development measures, and the northeast region revitalizing to deepen reforms are the strategic focuses of reshaping the manufacturing layout.
