Abstract: China's air pollution control has initially achieved the goals of total amount containment and structural improvement, and achieved periodical results. The secret of success lies in the exploration of an air pollution control model with Chinese characteristics, that is, the local environmental competition and regional collaborative governance model under the central supervision. This atmospheric environment governance model can not only give full play to the enthusiasm of the central and local governments and improve the efficiency of atmospheric environment governance, but also provide solutions with Chinese characteristics and Chinese wisdom for pollution prevention and control from the perspective of top-level design. However, this governance model still faces challenges from the three levels of system, mechanism and implementation. In the future, it is necessary to thoroughly implement Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization, clarify the role of the central and local governments in atmospheric environmental governance, and at the same time closely follow the new requirements of the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, dynamically improve the air quality assessment index system and optimize the regional collaborative governance mechanism.
